BC Residents & Companies - Claim a 30% Provincial Tax Credit Through an Investment in BC Companies that Qualify

May 9, 2025

[Vancouver, BC] – The Government of British Columbia encourages the development of a diverse and resilient economy by supporting the growth of innovative new businesses and the creation of jobs. To promote private investment in early-stage companies operating in key sectors, the Ministry of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation administers the Venture Capital Tax Credit Program (VCP).

Under this program, residents of British Columbia who invest in businesses registered as Eligible Business Corporations (EBCs) may claim a refundable provincial tax credit of 30% of their investment, up to a maximum of $120,000 per calendar year. Corporate investors are also eligible for a 30% tax credit, though it is non-refundable and has no maximum limit.

HOW IT WORKS

Each year, the Venture Capital Programs are allocated a limited pool of tax credits. Once an equity investment is made by a qualifying B.C. resident or corporation, the EBC applies on the investor’s behalf for a tax credit certificate equal to 30% of the investment.

The program operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Tax credits are issued only while the annual allocation remains available, and may be carried forward for up to four subsequent taxation years. Individual investors may also elect to apply the credit to the previous tax year if the investment is made within the first 60 days of a calendar year. The 2025 VCP budget is now active, and tax credits are currently being issued to investors on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Individuals may claim up to $120,000 in tax credits per year.
  • Corporations face no claim limit, though credits are non-refundable and apply only in the tax year of investment.
  • Investors must qualify under applicable securities rules and regulations.

RRSP, RRIF & TFSA CONSIDERATIONS

  • Investments made directly from an RRSP or RRIF are eligible for the 30% provincial tax credit.
  • Investments made outside of a registered plan (RRSP, RRIF, or TFSA) can be transferred into one after purchase without affecting tax credit eligibility.
  • Investments made directly from a TFSA do not qualify for the provincial tax credit.

Investors are strongly encouraged to consult a tax or financial advisor for their individual circumstances.
